In reviewing my own goals, I realize they are a bit broad and need to be broken into measurable parts, something that needs to be completed to track progress and success. It is quite embarrassing that I require this of my own students and yet have not done it myself.
I truly have stepped into this program for a doctoral degree because I love school and I love learning. I am continually enriched and enthused by questions, research, reading, active debate, challenges of ideals and beliefs, and new knowledge obtained. I enjoy being stimulated intellectually. I enjoy reflective discovery and the growth that can be made from this process.
Although I would not consider myself old, I am seasoned in many real life practice situations. My students enjoy learning the real world and achieving my doctoral degree will help me frame theory, research, and practice in an integrated manner rather than separate. Students often come back from a clinical experience and share that the people they worked with did not agree with what is taught in class. I would hope this is unique to nursing but my guess is that most professions have a gap between theory and practice. I have a great desire to be a teacher that can bridge the gap and make a difference for the students and ultimately the patients served.
A doctoral degree is valued in the academic community. Although not necessarily important in healthcare institutions, and not required in academics for the nursing programs, there is an objective to have more…
